There is no doubt that the past few months has thrown everyone into some amount of turmoil – some financial, and certainly most emotionally. We are living in very uncertain times. How does our nervous system integrate such changing terrain? The Limbic system is our “lizard brain,” the core survival mechanism. When things get very bad very fast, the proverbial blinders go on and the Neocortex (thinking rational brain) shuts down. In such a “Fight or Flight” state, our body physiology reacts AS IF a lion is in the room. This reaction allowed our “successful” ancestors to escape imminent danger and eventually pass on their DNA. But in modern times especially, what happens is that this switch stays on. New cycles never sleep, and these perceived tigers are forever lurking in our limbic system. What that means is our body remains in this heightened state where healing, digesting and even procreating is not supported. This leads to degenerative, inflammatory disorders, aches and pains, insomnia and depression, to name just some results of losing our balance.
What are some things we can do at home to help us out of this cycle? First of all, control your news intake. That may mean don’t read headlines right before bed or upon first awakening. Meditation, visualization of what you want to see in your life can greatly affect how you actually perceive what happens around you.
