Below are some of the techniques Dr Cohen offers to his patients:
Chiropractic Care
The profession of Chiropractic medicine has been around for over 100 years. It is based on the acknowledgement that the nervous system is the primary control center of the body. The brain is the body's super computer, which communicates to every cell in the body via the Spinal Cord. This delicate and intricate bundle of nervous tissue is encased in a flexible yet rigid spinal column that allows for movement while protecting the nervous tissue. The Spinal Cord communicates to the rest of the body via Nerve Roots which branch off on both sides of every level of the 24 movable vertebrae in your spine. These nerve roots then branch: one goes to an organ system and one goes to a related muscle. When the alignment of a vertebra is negatively affected, then there can be pressure on one of these nerve roots. The pressure of even a nickle on this nerve tissue has been shown to decrease information flow by as much as 60%. Think of a human "Innernet." Do you remember Dial Up? Think Buffering...! This can negatively affect the organ or muscle at the affected level of the spine. Chiropractors are trained to find and fix these misalignments of the spine.
In addition to the 24 movable spinal levels, there are a total of 208 bones and 300 pairs of skeletal muscles that move them. For example, did you know that there are more bones in one foot than in the whole spine? And that they need to move correctly every step you take (every move you make). Dr Cohen is trained to assess all of these joints and muscles, not just the spine. He looks at the whole person, the entire system.
Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex (P-DTR®)
P-DTR® is a functional neurology technique that finds and resets abnormal neurologic receptors around the body that cause pain and dysfunctional movement patterns. PDTR or P-DTR® (Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex) is the original work of spinal orthopedic surgeon Dr. José Palomar. The genesis of this work originated from Dr Palomar’s in-depth studies of both AK (Applied Kinesiology) and Carrick Functional Neurology.
Dr Palomar’s research and therapy explores how proprioception (our sensation of touch, pressure, hot, cold, pain, etc.) influences the body’s neuromuscular responses and organ function. Motor function (muscle strength and coordination) is modified by how the brain receives and then processes input from these receptors. Dysfunction leads to corrupted messages from the receptor to the brain. This incorrect messaging can result from injury, surgery or trauma, and can persist long after the tissues of the injured area have healed.
P-DTR® uses a system of neural challenges and muscle testing to identify these problems and “reset” them to the body’s “factory presets,” with normal function restored. The beauty is that this process is painless and results can often be remarkably quick.
Dr Cohen recently completed the 120 hour Foundations course and is excited to share his newly refined “super-powers” of P-DTR® diagnosis and treatment with you!
Applied Kinesiology® (AK)
Dr Cohen is a Board Certified AK practitioner through the International College of Applied Kinesiology (ICAK). Applied Kinesiology is a diagnostic system using muscle response testing to determine the structural, chemical and energetic areas of imbalance in the body. Dr Cohen utilizes the technique to aid in his diagnosis process, to best determine where to treat and which technique to utilize for optimal results.
NeuroEmotional Technique ® (NET)
Emotions such as fear, anger, and grief can affect us long after the original event that caused them. When our body fails to "let go" of these emotions, we can find ourselves with unexplained aversions, self-sabotaging behaviors, destructive beliefs, phobis, and chronic physical ailments. Neuro Emotional Technique is a way of releasing the emotional responses that are "stuck" inside your body and free you from their long-standing, harmful effects.

Kinease Release Methods (KRM)
KRM Kinease Release Methods (KRM) is a variation of Jones Strain-Counter Strain. The Osteopathic technique focuses on finding comfortable positions for the body to literally forget painful holding patterns of muscle and joint tension, spasm and pain. Holding the body in this way allows for a down-regulation of the nervous system. The result is greater ease, more range of motion and less pain. This is a very gentle and calming technique which works well for many people.
Active Release Technique® (ART)
Dr Cohen is Full Body Certified in ART. Overused muscle and other soft tissue injuries can result in scar tissue and restrictions in motion, and compression of nerves or blood vessels. These altered textures can be diagnosed and treated, often very efficiently by an ART provider.
The ART provider uses hands on treatment and specific patient motion to treat the problem. Many chronic problems clear up quickly with ART when the proper diagnosis and treatment are applied.
ART is very useful for athletes, work and auto injuries, anyone working at computers, gardeners, chefs…in short, just about everyone!
Symptoms directly helped by include ART:
- Swimmer’s shoulder
- Frozen shoulder
- Tennis & Golfers elbow
- Trigger finger
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Wrist & hand weakness & pain
- Sciatica
- Plantar Fascitis
- Knee & ankle pain
- Cumulative trauma disorders
- Peripheral nerve entrapments
- Muscle & ligament tears
Kinesiology Taping (RockTape®)
Dr Cohen is a certified level 2 Functional Movement Taping (FMT) "Rock Doc" and is proud to offer Kinesology Taping using RockTape.
According to rocktape.com, "RockTape is a special kind of tape known as kinesiology tape. First used by acupuncturists and chiropractors in Japan, today kinesiology tape is used by practitioners throughout the world to treat injuries and improve sports performance.
While the use of kinesiology taping is often associated with athletes such as Serena Williams, Kerri Walsh and Lance Armstrong, the reality is that RockTape is effective for the treatment of a wide variety of problems, not just sports injuries.
What is RockTape used for? Below are just some of the conditions helped with Rocktape:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Jumpers knee (PFS)
- ACL/MCL issues
- Rotator cuff
- Groin and hamstring pulls
- Lower back issues
- Shin splints
- Pain associated with pregnancy
- Postural correction
While we can’t turn a 5 hour marathoner into a 3 hour runner, we do have methods to help you break the 3 hour barrier if you’re already close. When applied properly, Rocktape can help athletes improve form and decrease fatigue through better blood flow. These are the two most critical aspects of increasing performance in almost any sport.
Our office offers both Fascial Movement (Sports Movement) & Functional (Rehab) Taping.
Cupping
Myo Fascial Decompression (MFD) - Fascial Flexibility and Neuroemuscular Re-Education - is based on the concepts of increasing fascial flexibility and incorporating neuromuscular re-education, the combination resulting in increased efficiency of motion in the connective tissue matrix. Unlike most other myofascial techniques, MFD utilizes negative pressure tools. Instead of further compressing the tissues, it lifts adhesions. If collagen is fibrotic and lacking blood flow already, it makes more sense to pull rather than push on these structures.
What makes MFD different from Cupping in Chinese Medicine is that it focuses on specific fascial restrictions, and not lines of energy.
Dr. Cohen studied this technique from Dr. Christopher DaPrato, DPT, the innovator of this technique, at UCSF Orthopedics & Physical Therapy.
Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab ® (FAKTR)
Dr Cohen is a Certified FAKTR practitioner. FAKTR stands for Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab. It is not a technique, but rather an approach to working with the fascial system in restoring function. It utilizes both manual work and Myofascial tools. FAKTR utilizes 5 treatment steps:
- Treatment in the position of provocation (pain, loss of range of motion, feeling of tightness within the fascia/soft tissues) and during motion.
- Treatment with the Motion of provocation
- Using Eccentric loading with resistance
- Using specific Functional activities with resistance
- Treatment while adding proprioceptive input
The result is frequently increased range of motion, better overall movement, coordination and less pain!
Physiotherapy
Dr Cohen incorporates the teachings of luminaries Craig Liebenson, Stewart McGill and the Prague School in his assessment and treatment protocols. If you don't move well, you won't properly heal and strengthen. By giving you appropriate home exercises, he gives you the tools to reinforce proper movement patterns and to strengthen around them. This way you can optimally and efficiently progress in your care.
Hesch Sacroiliac Practitioner (HSP)
Sacroiliac Joint Specialist - Hesch Method of Manual Therapy. The Hesch Method of Manual Therapy is an evidence-based treatment program which utilizes a solid understanding of joint mechanics and passive, low force application to correct pelvic joint dysfunction. It was developed by Dr Jerry Hesch, MHS, PT, DPT.
