Dr. Cohen is an amazing specialist whom I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon! I've been seeing him semi-regularly for nearly 5 years now. I also drive from two towns over just to see him, when there are literally dozens of other chiropractors in my immediate vicinity.
Years ago we met at a climbing gym in Berkeley where he was giving free spinal evaluations to people using electrical sensory equipment. Being familiar with these scans (having had them before) I wanted to see how I was faring after all the rough treatment I'd been giving myself at work and the gym. It turned out that I was in need of some adjustments, which didn't surprise me as I'd had previous conditions (work injury claims) and was an avid climber.
He scanned my girlfriend at the time, who was also in the same trade and climbed regularly, but said she had no alignment problems, so it gave me the sense that he is not out to try and make a buck - which is a reassuring feeling when seeing a medical professional. On that same note, I've also noticed he doesn't try to schedule appointments as frequently as other chiropractors I've seen.
Dr. Cohen's practice incorporates spinal adjustments, active muscle release technique (which feels to me like an extremely targeted massage), vortex energy work (which is like reikki), neuro-emotional technique (NET - which is amazing, see this link: http://healing.about.c... ) and applied kinesiology.
He can use these techniques to recommend (or warn against) health supplements or agents which we come in contact, which is quite unique. Although not actively practicing, he even has a certificate in Shiatsu (he studied in Kyoto - ask him to speak Japanese). He has a fantastic massage chair, a great detoxing foot bath to boot, and from what I hear he plays a mean saxophone. His wellness center has acupuncture, massage and nutrition specialists, and I believe they have yoga and pilates instructors, as well.
Such an all-around great guy and caring individual, I can't recommend him enough. -Avery F. Oakland
I've seen Dr. Cohen on and off for the past couple years for various injuries (back, neck, knee). He is excellent and has made a believer in chiropractic (I was a longtime skeptic) and in Active Release Technique. Not only is he thoughtful about diagnosis and treatment, but he is interested in ongoing wellness and prevention of further injuries.
Dr. Cohen is super personable, and I trust that he is up-to-date on the most current knowledge in the field. The office is also super clean and you don't wait forever to be seen. I would not give just anyone 5 stars, especially medical professionals, but I have no complaints. I would definitely recommend him. -Andsay C. San Francisco
I trust Dr. Cohen completely. I have been going to him for several years, and now drive all the way across town (almost 8 miles) to receive treatments at his Albany office.
I am a dancer and teacher, so my body is my workplace. Unfortunately, I tend to wait until I am in a lot of pain, for a while, before seeking treatment. Yet every time I go, I get relief. Immediately.
Dr. Cohen is thorough, extremely knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in observing his patients. He takes a holistic approach to healing, working with the whole person instead of body parts when it comes to making adjustments. He takes detailed notes during each session, so I never feel like he is working on autopilot, but rather is giving me continuity (and depth) of care.
Dr. Cohen has cleared up pain that I thought would be a permanent feature of my life! He is punctual, kind, attentive, and - my favorite thing - he does not try to rope me into an addiction to adjustments (like other chiro's I have seen), but instead gives me things to do (when I ask) to help me maintain the benefits of his treatment.
Added bonus: his quirky sense of humor. When was the last time you laughed at the chiro? -Nina H. Oakland
Dr. Cohen is fantastic! I have been to chiropractors for over 10 years, lower back pain and other oddities, and have always needed to repeat over & over again.
Dr. Cohen saw me when I was in pretty bad shape, and was able to mend my back in just two visits. He has a very thoughtful approach, using a variety of integrative techniques that get to the root of the problem, and it helps sustain the fix as well.
His offices are very nice and clean as well.
I highly recommend his services to anyone seeking quality care. -Nicole A. Albany
I have been seeing chiropractors off and on for a good 20 years. I have spent untold hours sitting hunched over a computer and am now bearing the brunt of that abuse. Although I have been very mindful not to make these injuries worse, this past year I have found myself with limited motion in my neck and all around stiffness in my shoulders and forearms.
Recently I found Dr. Cohen and went to him for treatment. Through a series of noninvasive tests, he accurately assessed the factors that have contributed to my current condition. His methods were not like I was used to with more conventional chiropractors (mostly with whom I have had success), but seemed to address my symptoms in a far shorter timeframe than I would have expected. In 2-3 short treatments, he made more progress than I would have ever dreamed! My neck is about twice as flexible as it had been. In addition to this, I had an acute lower back pain that came out of nowhere. He adjusted it twice and the instantaneous relief was palpable. In two days I was back 99%.
The thing about Dr. Cohen's practice is that in some ways, though he as a chiropractor is the guide and expeditor to wellness, personal responsibility is what completes the picture. Dr. Cohen is a wonderful resource when committing yourself to overall good health. Highly recommended. -Judy H. El Cerrito
Dr. Cohen's treatment was very effective not only for my terrible headaches and jaw tightness, but for a host of other complaints that I had not even planned to bring up with him. He convinced me that everything is connected in the body and mind, with tangible results. After seeing him every week or two for a few months, I left his care having virtually no more bad headaches or jaw tightness, as well as no more knee or foot pain, better posture, and many techniques I could do on my own to improve body alignment, relieve muscle tension and prevent further problems. He has a wonderful way of listening to patients and incorporating all of his vast knowledge to create a unique treatment plan, and adjusting (no pun intended) as needed along the way. I highly recommend Dr. Stefan Cohen. -Wendy J. Albany
Dr. Cohen is an amazing healer. I tell him that he is going to put himself out of business... before seeing him for my neck issues, I had to see a chiropractor twice a week. After a few sessions with him I was able to come in once and month and now it is only once in a long while when I need a tune up.
I've had chronic neck pains and a reverse c curve. I had been visiting another chiropractor for one year and hardly made any progress. I also felt like my visit wasn't specialized for me, but instead a standard routine that he applied to all of his patients.
Dr. Cohen is completely different. He pays close attention to my specific needs. Not only has he helped me so much with my neck concerns, but also has gotten rid of the loud snap that my hip did daily as well as the pain that I had in my left knee. The combination of ART (Active release technique) and adjustments is so effective.
Dr. Cohen has also helped me with other health concerns. I was very fatigued and sick for a long time and he told me I had an issue with my adrenal glands and gave me some pills which made me 100% better the next day. I also had a rash issue that my general doctor could not figure out for months and after 5 minutes he told me it was a candida overgrowth problem and alas, I was able to get better.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon his office just down the street from my apartment. Since then I've moved to SF but still travel the Albany to visit him. The office is clean and the staff is friendly. -Kami L. San Francisco
Dr. Cohen has solved many issues for me including neck pain and digestive problems. I really appreciate his multi-faceted approach to treatment and the fact that he assesses all body systems. Aside from all of that his is a joy to work with, knowledgeable and approachable. I really appreciate the care I have received from him. -Marie B. Berkeley
I think Stefan is someone who should be working with all our pro teams since their stars get injured so often!!! He is a great guy and a better doctor. He knows how to treat muscles to respond. I can honestly tell you that my body feels younger now than it did before I came to him for some help. -Abuid A. Albany
Dr. Cohen and the rest of the team at Innate Chiropractic never fail to impress me with their professionalism and caring.
I came to Dr. Cohen after suffering from debilitating migraines for the past seven years, and the combination of manual adjustments, muscle work and neuro-emotional technique have decreased their severity and frequency markedly. Now I go in for a tune up every few months.
I've also worked with most of the other practitioners in the office (Rena, Tatjana and Dr. Berry) and have had nothing but great experiences. Highly recommend. -Stacey W. Berkeley
Dr. Stefan Cohen is tremendous. He's helped my back and my shoulders in ways that I had not thought possible. I had given up the idea of being able to swim or throw a ball again, but his treatment has helped more than anyone - and certainly more than any physical therapist - ever did. -Ethan S. Berkeley
Great guy. I went to him because I have an ankle that benefits from an occasional adjustment. Dr. Cohen did the usual chiropractor thing, which is try to talk me into multiple vists, but he was very nice and respectful when I said no. He did manage to sell me a second, full body adjusment, which was great. Best of all, he has been very patient in helping me to deal with my insurance company - I'll spare you the details of that issue, but Dr. Cohen is still providing me with information that the insurance jerks are demanding over a year after both visits.
He is a very patient, very professional, and seems to be a very competent guy. -Nick K. Oakland
I worked as a stone mason and construction for over 30 years. I had a constant pain in my lower back that many chiropractors were unable to repair.
I went to see Dr. Cohen about a pain in my leg from falling down a ladder. He fervently studied my entire bodies mechanical structure. He moved joints and tested muscular strengthes with a kind of regular system. He is highly trained in many disciplines.
He found the cause of the twenty year pain. His recommendations led to a total recovery in about one month. I have had no pain in my lower back since then.
Stephan also repaired my leg from the ladder fall.
Dr. Cohen has a great sense of humor and a gentle presence. I highly recommend him. -Dana M. Albany
I have been going to various chiropractors for years, and while all have helped, Dr. Cohen has helped the most in the shortest amount of time. He uses holistic techniques along with chiropractic treatment to help heal the whole body. I've got to say that he is the best chiropractor I've been to in the 15+ years I've been seeing chiropractors. I'm very pleased. -Robyn G. Oakland
Where to begin? There are so many great things about Dr. Cohen & his practice. I began seeing Dr. Cohen a little over a year ago as a result of a car accident (which he was fortunately able to take on a lien). Not only did he help me with the injuries which resulted from the car accident, he has also helped me in many ways with other health related issues. He is friendly, approachable, trustworthy and talented. His practice is integrated and holistic, with opportunities to address injuries at the source through multiple modalities.
He's a rare find and going to his office is always a pleasure- not only does he have a bookshelf full of insightful books, he also has a fabulous massage chair in the waiting area-- incentive to show up early! There's also a friendly team of health professionals: yoga, physical therapy, massage.
One of the things I especially appreciate about his practice is that he has a diverse set of tools and ways of thinking about healing, whether it's a traditional adjustment, nutritional support, more subtle energy work, or muscle release techniques (all of which he is very skilled at). Often he'll mention that he's about to undertake additional training-- he's always seeking ways to deepen his practice. With training in shiatsu, he also understands a lot about Eastern medicine points (i.e., lung points) and meridians.
He also thankfully offers a student rate to those of us who are in school and are struggling financially. And yet, how would I get through all the computer work and studying without his periodic adjustments?? (Cal students who have SHIP insurance currently get $25 off 4 visits per benefit year once they have met their $200 deductible).
To sum it up, Dr. Cohen is a talented chiropractor with a heart- with his ample knowledge base and great care, I highly recommend him! -D.D. Albany
I have been going to Dr. Cohen for almost 2 years now. I had suffered from knee and back pain for nearly 15 years with little relief from various therapies and treatments. Dr. Cohen uses not only chiropractic methods, but holistic practices as well. Thanks to him I am back to an active, pain free lifestyle again.
Dr. Cohen doesn't treat just the symptom, but focuses on the entire body to start and fix the main issues. He'll always explain to me what I may be doing wrong or why my body is reacting in a certain way and how we are going to fix the issue.
He is dedicated to his craft and his talents show. -Bryen B. Oakland
I came to Dr. Cohen with an acute back injury. As a runner and a workout fanatic, I was concerned that this injury would prevent me from doing the activites that I love. I've had negative experiences with chiropractic in the past, but Dr. Cohen instantly put me at ease. He is extremely gentle and has a terrific bedside manner. His biomechanical knowledge is amazing and he also truly gets the mind body connection, treating not only the physical aspects of my injury, but the emotional scars as well. Dr. Cohen is a truly gifted healer and a wonderful human being! -Lisa V. Concord
I started seeing Dr. Cohen about 5 years ago for acute neck and back pain. Not only did I receive relief from the pain but I was also happy to receive lifestyle support. I really appreciated the way he tackled my issues from many angles including recommending dietary supplements and referring me to a physical trainer to strengthen weaknesses that were the cause of my issues.
Dr. Cohen is also a gifted healer in ways that stretch one's expectations of chiropractic. A few years ago I came to his office and mentioned offhand that for the previous two weeks I had been having gastritis that wouldn't resolve. After his treatment, which included chiropractic adjustment and some energy work the gastritis stopped. Not only did that experience confirm that Dr. Cohen was talented but it captured so fully the ways that the mind and body are connected.
Under Dr. Cohen's care, not only can you expect to be treated as a whole person, you get to interact with his approachable personality and a good sense of humor. Thanks Dr. Cohen for all of your support and encouragement. -Marie B. Emeryville
My only experience at Innate Chiropractic has been with Dr. Cohen, who has been treating me for about 6 years now. Needless to say, I am happy with his service. I work on a computer most of the day, and often have sore back/shoulders/arms/wrists. A visit to Dr. Cohen eases the tension and pain. Throughout the years, he has treated various illnesses/pains, and always comes up with solutions for long-term benefits, not just immediate treatment of my symptoms.
I always refer him to my family/friends. When I do, I usually describe him as a "natural healer". He's not a "traditional" chiropractor - one who cracks your back and sends you on your way. He knows many different techniques to address any health issue from all angles - mental, emotional, physical (soft tissue or structural), chemical, etc. I think of the service he offers to be a complete wellness solution - he addresses the whole picture, not just one aspect of it. -Daniel S. El Cerrito
I have been seeing Dr Cohen for several years. I appreciate his very deep and broad toolbox. Not just chiropractic but many healing techniques to support his practice. His methods are very effective in treating sports injuries and general healing. He has very healing hands and is a very special and talented practitioner. He treats the whole person, both energetically and physically. His dedication to applying the approriate tools makes him the BEST. He is also a great guy; fun and intelligent to talk with and has a great sense of humor. He helps me to remember just what is important. -Judith G. Oakland
With Dr. Cohen's help, I am able to engage in all the sports I love and am learning to love. If my shoulders are hurting from swimming, or my knees are aching from running. Dr. Cohen is able to quickly find the muscles and the movements that are causing the problem and then "fixes" it. It's amazing. -Bethany B. Berkeley
Dr. Cohen is wonderful. He uses a variety of techniques and works very holistically. He has helped me get rid of chronically tingling toes, back and neck aches. I always feel as if he understands what's going on with my body with very little explanation from me. I have had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Cohen. -Heather H. Berkeley
a friend of mine recommended doctor cohen to me quite a while ago. i've seen many chiropractors over the years, and his practice is the most holistic unique one i've ever been to. i agree with the previous reviewer -- a real healer. -Revjd G. Oakland
