Frequently Asked Questions About Pilates

What is "Pilates"?
"Pilates" is a body conditioning system that was created over eighty years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. It was initially popular with dancers and other performers and later became popular in the fitness world. Pilates exercises are performed on the floor or on specialized equipment and focus on aligning the shoulder girdle and building strong abdominal muscles and a strong and supple back. Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits including stronger back and abdominal muscles, greater lung capacity, better circulation, greater bone density, healthier joints, and increased flexibility. Pilates also helps people develop greater body awareness, better posture, and improved coordination and balance. By coordinating the minds, breath and body, Pilates teaches balance and control of the body. With practice this capacity can be carried over into other areas of one's life.
